Dog Collars: Pinch Collars & Shock Collars
from:Pinch Collar: Pinch collars have gained in popularity in the last few years. Many owners think a pinch collar is the answer to all their dog's pulling problems. They think they are gaining better control of their dogs, but I think it just makes an owner lazy. They expect the pinch collar to do all the work for them. Dogs should learn how to maneuver through commands and leash control and not through pain.
More owners are using them because they are told that it won't hurt their dog. I don't agree. I think it creates discomfort and despite this discomfort, a dog is still going to pull anyway. The purpose of training is to impart your knowledge to your dog and to increase his intelligence, not build strong muscles in his neck.
Shock Collar: Shock collars, like pinch collars, are being used more by dog owners. The purpose of a shock collar is to control a dog at a distance when working on off-leash training. It sends a pre-determined shock to the dog's neck and makes the dog stop doing a particular behavior. I don't like shock collars for the same reason I don't like pinch collars. There is no communication or bonding between owner and dog with such devices.
Shock collars need an incredible amount of good timing. If you give your dog a shock at the wrong time, it can cause more problems than it prevents. For instance, if your dog is running away from you and you give him a shock while he passes some children, then he may develop an aversion toward children by associating the shock with the children.
Shock collars and pinch collars teach obedience through pain and discomfort rather than through love and trust. They are not a magic pill to correct bad behavior. A shock collar only has value when it is used in the right hands.
Remember, you want your dog to focus on you because she trusts you, not because she is receiving pain impulses in her neck. Training involves effort. There are no shortcuts. The proper positive training that you invest into your dog will last the lifetime of both you and your pet.
